Sometimes my favorite Ensworth Grinds are the ones where we meet the behind the scenes folks. The person I’m about to introduce you to could not be more behind the scenes, yet without him our school would literally fall apart. He keeps our air conditioning running on hot days, sidewalks cleared on snowy ones and handles every request big or small that keeps this school the well running facility it is. Meet Facilities Manager of the Red Gables campus Mark Raines.
As head of maintenance for Red Gables you and your staff are constantly moving. What’s a typical day look like for you?
I think in my position no day is typical. It is ever changing and challenging due to requests and the occasional emergency. Due to the age of some of our buildings you never know what you are going to face. One thing is for sure, I never get bored.
Is there one memory of a set-up, clean-up or disaster that was you’re most challenging so far?
The most challenging emergency that I will never forget is when the sprinkler system failed in the dining hall, in the middle of winter. It flooded the west side of the Red Gables building. We all pulled together, maintenance (from both campuses), faculty, staff and even some board members got involved. With a lot of work and brainstorming we recovered with little disruption to the students.
What is your favorite Ensworth event during the year?
I like Pet day and Pancake Breakfast the most. It is a lot of work but everyone seems to enjoy these events.
What is it about Ensworth and working for a school that is special to you?
I enjoy working at Ensworth because of the people. The faculty and staff we have are unique and awesome. You don’t realize what a special place this is until you go visit or talk to people from other schools. I try hard to maintain a safe and comfortable environment for learning.
