Each year, Ensworth middle school students participate in the National Geographic Geography Bee. The first number of rounds take place in the classroom followed up by the main event where the top 10 finalist (William Gallivan, Ben Rosenthal, Jackson Harris, Drew Harris, Isabella Johnston, Warner Lamar, Margo Macy, Evan Nagareda, Jake Kirkham, Quin Cochran) compete until a winner is decided. Multiple rounds took place in a variety of formats from map reading, to written answers on a sheet of paper, to verbal answers. Slowly students were eliminated until we were left with our 2011 winner Evan Nagareda. Evan competed against runner-up Jackson Harris in the final round of 3 questions. The winning question was: Africa’s highest peak is a part of a national park in the country Tanzania. Name the mountain. The answer? Mt. Kilimanjaro. From here, Evan will go on to take a qualifying test to see if he is eligible to compete at the state level Geography Bee. Congratulations to Evan and all the participants in this year’s competition.
