The Red Gables kitchen has recently undergone a makeover from the inside out. Debbie McQuitty and her kitchen staff have been working hard to make healthy eating habits a priority in the lunchroom. Mrs. McQuitty worked with a dietician to help implement a new system that educates students on what kind of food they are putting on their plates. Everyday all the foods are broken down into three categories on the lunch board: Green means go, Yellow means caution, Red means think about it.
“We want to be different, we want to be a leader in empowering students to make healthy choices. Teachers have even mentioned to me after lunch they go back to their rooms and discuss why certain foods were red and others were green,” said McQuitty.
The Ensworth High School will be implementing this same program in the next few weeks as well. Mrs. McQuitty hopes this will help teachers and students create healthy eating habits to take with them outside the Ensworth doors.
