Mr. Scott’s eighth grade history class looked a little different yesterday as the students acted out cases from the colonial Puritan trials that took place in the 1630’s.
The students were given cases of crimes that range from breaking the Sabbath, gambling, and theft, to crimes such as immodesty, dancing and long hair. These “trials” exposed the self-righteous behavior of the Puritans who chose to devise a rigid behavior code that few people could ever follow. The irony is that convicted wrongdoers and dissenters were brutally punished imprisoned, fined, exiled or executed—which is exactly why these settlers left England in the first place.
Students were given parameters but were responsible for creating the whole scene, telling details of the accused, and then the judge(s)/magistrates handed out their punishment based on real life punishments of the time.
